When Awake News first broke the story of your arrest on its Facebook page, you came out strongly demanding that the post be taken down, insisting that the media outlet should verify its stories before publishing them. Does that mean you were not even aware that you had been arrested at the time, or was someone else managing your account on your behalf?
From that day, I started closely following developments surrounding your case at EOCO.
The following day, I watched videos showing a large crowd of young men and women gathered outside EOCO. Many of them clearly did not even know why they were there or the name of the person being detained.
What struck me most was that many of these young people appeared to be struggling with drug addiction. They looked vulnerable, hopeless, and, in many cases, abandoned. Yet I was surprised when one young woman repeatedly shouted, “Release my father!”
“Father?” I asked myself.
I saw another video in which this lady had money in her hands – looking like she was paid for participating in the demonstration. One man who looks like a top NPP official knowing that the media cameras were watching alerted her to take cover from the views of the camera.
Yesterday, I also saw another video of you visiting them, spending time with them, sharing a meal, and thanking them for supporting you. While your expression of gratitude is commendable, I believe there is another side to this story.
Rather than simply appreciating their presence, it appears you may be capitalising on their vulnerability for political gain. These are young people who seem to need genuine help, not just recognition for showing up at a demonstration.
If the people who call you “father” are living in such conditions, then your “fatherhood” deserves serious reflection. A father should do more than receive loyalty—he should provide guidance, protection, and opportunities.
You can redeem that image by going back to help them improve their lives. Support them with access to rehabilitation programmes where necessary, counselling services, skills training, employment opportunities, and, where possible, better living conditions. These are some of the responsibilities one would expect of a “father,” especially from someone who served in government for eight years.
“Commanding the narrative” should not be limited to using your EOCO case to attract public attention. It should also be about using your influence to transform lives and set a positive agenda.
