Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has shared how harsh criticism nearly drove her out of music.
In a revealing conversation on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo, Wendy described herself as “the most bullied artiste in Ghana.” She recounted how trolls constantly compared her to the late Ebony Reigns and accused her of copying the icon’s style.
“At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany,” Wendy said. “The trolling was so intense that it affected my entire family. Some of my relatives were even embarrassed to associate with me.”
Wendy said she understood her family’s concern because the backlash was relentless. “They would edit my pictures to make me look like an old woman just to mock me. People said I wasn’t talented. It was heartbreaking. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, but it made me stronger.”
Despite the pressure to give up, Wendy remained committed to her dream. Over the years, she has risen above the criticism, winning several music awards, including accolades at the 3Music Awards and the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
Her resilience paid off. Her latest single, It’s Too Late, is topping charts and receiving major airplay on both local and international platforms.
Wendy’s story highlights the toll online bullying can take on public figures and the strength it takes to overcome it.
