Chief Executive Officer of Lynx Group Limited, Richie Mensah, has opened up about the backlash his mother faced for supporting his decision to pursue music instead of becoming a medical doctor.

Speaking on Changes with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime, Richie said most people expected him to study medicine after completing senior high school. But at age 17, he chose a different path, with his mother’s full backing.

“I finished SHS and had a convo with my mum, telling her I wanted to do music. It was a big shocker because everyone expected me to go to medical school,” he recalled.

He gave himself a year to explore music and used that time to open a studio. His mother supported him throughout, even though many people criticized her.

“So many people insulted her. They said she was allowing me to waste my intelligence and future. They couldn’t understand why I chose music over medicine,” Richie added.

That early rejection and criticism inspired his hit song ‘Yaro’, which captures his defiance and determination.

“When I released my first song, people didn’t believe I would succeed. ‘Yaro’ in Hausa means ‘small boy.’ I was saying, ‘They say I be Yaro, but they can’t contest the Yaro,’” he explained.

Richie said the song aims to motivate young people to follow their passion, even if it means going against conventional expectations.

“Age and career choice shouldn’t limit anyone. If you believe in yourself, go for it.”
