Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has revealed that several artistes he wrote songs for never compensated or credited him, despite the tracks becoming hits.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM, the “Monica” hitmaker expressed disappointment, explaining that he initially expected fairness from collaborators but was often let down.
“There are songs I wrote where I thought they would do the needful later, but they didn’t. Some of them became very popular, and I still didn’t get a cut. If I start listing them, you’d be shocked,” he said.
Eugene added that while he let some of those situations slide in the past, he’s now taking legal action to protect his rights, mentioning Mr. Drew as one example.
“For some, like Mr. Drew, I took them on. Others, I just moved on. But now, it’s business. If you bring a hook and it works, let’s settle it properly, my lawyer will handle the rest,” he said.
He also praised the new wave of Ghanaian artistes who, in his view, better understand the business side of the music industry.
“I’m glad the new generation respects music professionalism. They understand the importance of credit and compensation,” he concluded.
