Gov’t resumes evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa as xenophobic attacks escalate

Accra, Ghana – The Government of Ghana has announced the resumption of the next phase of evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa following the latest wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, about 1,000 Ghanaians are expected to be evacuated in batches, with the first flights scheduled to arrive in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27.

The exercise will begin with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to voluntarily return home under the government’s emergency evacuation programme.

Authorities say priority will be given to women, children, the elderly, students, and persons with medical conditions, while the High Commission remains on standby to assist distressed Ghanaians with travel arrangements.

The government also expressed profound appreciation to The Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for opening their premises to accommodate Ghanaians who fled their homes during the attacks while awaiting evacuation.

The Ministry further urged Ghanaians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid areas experiencing unrest, and cooperate fully with officials to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

Reassuring citizens, the government declared that “no Ghanaian will be abandoned in harm’s way”, stressing its commitment to bringing every affected Ghanaian home safely.
