Accra, Ghana – Former Vice President and 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of an Agona West National Democratic Congress (NDC) Branch Organizer who is facing charges over alleged false publications and offensive comments about him.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said he neither lodged a complaint against the individual nor authorized any prosecution in his name.
He stressed that he does not support the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian for expressing opinions about him, stating that throughout his public life, he has endured insults and false allegations without resorting to the use of state institutions against his critics.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the appropriate response to offensive speech is “better speech,” while falsehoods should be countered with the truth rather than arrests, prosecutions or what he described as “crushing bail conditions” imposed on ordinary citizens.
The former Vice President therefore appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the case and any similar prosecutions purportedly undertaken on his behalf, while calling for the immediate release of the accused to reunite with his family.
He further noted that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, can express themselves freely without fear of persecution.
Dr. Bawumia also indicated that he forgives the accused individual, wished him well, and urged political actors across the country to focus on issues that directly affect the lives and welfare of Ghanaians rather than engaging in divisive political rhetoric.
