The Nanumba South District Assembly has officially commenced the construction of a modern Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Zonyohini, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality primary healthcare services across the district.
The project is being implemented with funding support from the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP), a development cooperation programme focused on addressing critical human security and social infrastructure needs in underserved communities in Ghana.
The sod-cutting ceremony, held on Tuesday, 27th January 2026 at Zonyohini, attracted a cross-section of stakeholders, including traditional authorities, representatives of the Japanese Government, health professionals, assembly members, and residents of the beneficiary community.
Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive for Nanumba South, Hon. Musah Abdul Rashid, described the project as a significant milestone in the Assembly’s development agenda and a practical demonstration of government’s resolve to strengthen primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.
He noted that for several years, the absence of a modern health facility in Zonyohini had compelled residents—particularly pregnant women, children, the elderly, and emergency cases—to travel long distances in search of basic healthcare services.
“This project marks a turning point for the people of Zonyohini. The construction of this CHPS compound will bring essential healthcare services closer to our people, reduce preventable health risks, and improve health outcomes within the community and its environs,” the DCE stated.
Hon. Musah Abdul Rashid expressed profound appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their continued partnership and support towards Ghana’s development, emphasizing that the GGHSP initiative exemplifies Japan’s strong commitment to grassroots development and human security.
“The Government of Japan has once again demonstrated its solidarity with the people of Ghana, particularly rural and underserved communities. On behalf of the people of Nanumba South, we are deeply grateful for this timely and impactful intervention,” he added.
He further explained that the project is consistent with the Assembly’s development priorities and the government’s broader policy objective of strengthening the CHPS programme as a cornerstone of primary healthcare delivery nationwide.
The DCE also called on residents of Zonyohini to take collective ownership of the facility upon completion, stressing that community participation, protection, and maintenance would be essential to ensuring the sustainability and long-term benefits of the project.
In their separate remarks, traditional leaders of Zonyohini welcomed the initiative and commended the Nanumba South District Assembly and the Government of Japan for responding to the long-standing healthcare needs of the community. They assured all stakeholders of the community’s full cooperation throughout the construction period.
When completed, the modern CHPS compound is expected to provide outpatient services, maternal and child healthcare, preventive health education, and residential accommodation for health personnel, thereby significantly enhancing healthcare delivery at the community level.
The ceremony climaxed with a symbolic sod-cutting by the Regent of Chichagi and Elders of Zonyohini, alongside the District Chief Executive and other dignitaries, officially marking the commencement of construction works on the facility.
