Wa: 42-Year-old man jailed 10yrs for defiling seven-year-old boy

Wa, Upper West Region – The Wa High Court has sentenced a 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunatch, to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of defiling a seven-year-old boy.

The conviction follows a trial after the accused was arrested by the Ghana Police Service in January this year.

According to a statement signed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribare as first reported by GCB Online, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, after the victim’s mother reported that the offence had occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

The Police said investigations commenced immediately after the complaint was lodged, while the victim was referred to a medical facility for examination and provided with psychosocial support.

The statement noted that the accused was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody pending the determination of the case.

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found Elyasu Kunatch guilty of the offence after a full trial and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command welcomed the conviction, reaffirming its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse and sexual offences are brought to justice.

The Command further assured the public that it will continue to pursue all reported cases of child abuse, sexual and gender-based violence without fear or favour.

It also urged parents, guardians, caregivers and the general public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station to facilitate swift intervention and justice for victims.
