Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated Ghana’s Black Queens for their hard-fought victory over Algeria that secured them a place in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-finals.
In a Facebook post, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang praised the team’s resilience and urged Ghanaians to rally behind the Queens as they prepare for a crucial clash with hosts Morocco.
“A big congratulations to our Black Queens for their remarkable victory over Algeria. The whole nation is behind you. The dream is alive,” she wrote.
The match, held on July 19, ended in a 4-2 penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time. Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was the standout performer, making two crucial saves that earned Ghana a historic return to the semi-finals, nine years since their last appearance.
Ghana started the match strongly, with Stella Nyamekye finding the net in the first half, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR. Despite close chances from Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah, the Queens couldn’t break the deadlock.
Coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s tactical substitutions in the second half almost paid off, with Evelyn Badu coming close to scoring late in the game.
Ghana will now face Morocco in the semi-finals as the dream of lifting the WAFCON trophy lives on.
