Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has firmly stated that Ghana’s Constitution allows only two presidential terms, and that should be respected without reinterpretation.
“If the Constitution says two terms, I don’t know what interpretation can be put to it,” he said during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16.
Justice Dzamefe stressed that what the Constitution says must be followed strictly. “I can’t have anything against what is in the Constitution,” he added.
Asset Declaration and Judiciary Integrity
Justice Dzamefe also confirmed that he has declared his assets, in line with constitutional requirements. “If the Constitution says all public officers must declare their assets, Supreme Court Justices must comply. I have declared mine,” he said.
He went on to reject any suppression of investigative journalism, even when such reporting targets the judiciary. “Any investigative journalist who wants to do a thorough job, once it’s true and fair, why would I recommend suppression?” he asked.
More Courts, Faster Cases, Stronger Economy
Justice Dzamefe also called for more courts nationwide to help speed up case processing. “There must be more courts so that cases move faster. If cases are disposed of early, I support it,” he noted.
He agreed that faster case resolution supports economic development, especially by building trust with investors. “The faster the cases go, the better for the investor community,” he said, but cautioned that increasing the number of judges should depend on actual needs.
