Trophy success could decide Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid

Major changes could be on the horizon for Real Madrid’s coaching setup, with veteran manager Carlo Ancelotti likely to part ways with the club when his contract expires at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Although Ancelotti has been linked once again with the Brazil national team job, a role he turned down in 2023, he appears content to see out his remaining time in Madrid.

However, there remains a possibility that the decision might not rest solely with him, especially if the club’s trophy ambitions aren’t met.

According to reports from Relevo, Real Madrid’s management are open to Ancelotti continuing through next season, but only if he delivers significant silverware.

Having won both La Liga and the Champions League last season, a similar result in 2025 could be the only way he stays in charge.

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has already emerged as the club’s preferred successor. The current Bayer Leverkusen coach has reportedly been in talks with Madrid and is seen as the ideal long-term replacement. Alonso’s contract in Germany also runs until 2026, aligning perfectly with Ancelotti’s timeline.

Alonso recently turned down an offer from Liverpool, further fuelling speculation that he is reserving himself for a return to the Spanish capital.

The plan would allow both coaches to fulfill their current contracts respectfully, Ancelotti with Madrid and Alonso with Leverkusen, before making the transition.

Still, Madrid’s demanding culture means plans could change quickly. Should Ancelotti fall short in May, especially in La Liga or the Champions League, the club could move to fast-track Alonso’s appointment.

Ultimately, the next few months will be crucial in determining whether Ancelotti bows out on his own terms or if the Xabi Alonso era begins earlier than expected.
