The Tema Traditional Council has announced a ban on extravagant funerals and lavish social events within its jurisdiction, citing concerns over rising social pressure, excessive spending, and the growing financial burden on families.
The directive, issued after consultations with traditional leaders and community stakeholders, seeks to promote modesty, cultural discipline, and responsible use of resources in the observance of funerals and other ceremonies.
According to the Council, the increasing trend of elaborate funerals—characterised by costly decorations, extended durations, and expensive displays—has placed undue pressure on residents, with some families incurring debts to meet societal expectations.
Under the new guidelines, limits are expected to be placed on the scale, duration, and nature of funeral activities, as well as other social gatherings deemed excessive.
The Council emphasised that funerals should remain solemn cultural rites focused on honouring the deceased, rather than becoming platforms for competition and display of wealth.
Traditional authorities further indicated that enforcement measures would be put in place to ensure compliance, warning that individuals who flout the directive could face sanctions under customary regulations.
Residents and community leaders have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the move as timely and necessary, while others have raised concerns about its potential impact on local businesses linked to the events industry.
