Supreme Court has overturned a 2020 bench warrant issued for the arrest of Kevin Taylor, a US-based Ghanaian journalist and social commentator.
The warrant, initially issued by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour of the High Court, stemmed from allegedly contemptuous remarks made by Taylor in a Facebook video, where he criticized the judge’s role in a high-profile corruption case involving former NCA Board Chair, Eugene Baffour-Bonnie.
Taylor had accused the judge of receiving a promotion to the Court of Appeal in exchange for rulings favorable to the government, a claim the High Court viewed as scandalous and harmful to the judiciary’s integrity.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that the arrest warrant was unlawful, bringing to an end a five-year legal impasse. The court’s decision now clears Taylor of any legal obligation to appear before the High Court on contempt charges.
The ruling is a major legal victory for Taylor, whose outspoken views and controversial commentaries have often put him at odds with Ghana’s political and judicial elite.
