Soldier carrying Akufo-Addo Lawyer’s bag ‘demoralizes police’ – Prof Gyampo

Political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has said that act of a soldier carrying President Nana Akufo-Addo’s private lawyer’s bag is demoralizes the police.

This came after a soldier was seen carrying a bag of documents for a lawyer of president Nana Akuffo Addo at the Supreme Court. The lawyer Frank Davies is counsel for the second respondent, Akuffo Addo in the ongoing 2020 election petition.

The picture of the soldier behind the Lawyer that was circulating on social media sparked a huge public outcry, as it was seen as inimical and undignified to the Ghana Armed Forces.

Prof. Gyampo explained on his Facebook handle that “It is not the duty of any soldier to be carrying the bag of any private legal practitioner to court. And that “defending the territorial integrity of any country does not include body-guarding civilian appointees”.

He further added that “these gestures demoralize the Police and cause their public disrespect”.

Turning our attention to the mode of recruitment, credibility, and the strength level of Ghana police service, the political science lecturer stressed, “If we think the Police is weak and can no longer offer such services as providing security for appointees and private people, the way to go is to strengthen them and check how we recruit people there”.

“We have no business “civilianizing” our soldiers. It would come back to haunt us” he concluded.
