A pregnant student sitting for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) surprised exam officials when she went into labour during the Information Technology paper.

The incident happened on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the Asenua Presbyterian JHS Examination Centre in Mamponteng, located in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

According to witnesses, the candidate excused herself to use the washroom mid-exam. A policewoman stationed at the centre, sensing something unusual, followed her. Moments later, she discovered the student in active labour.

Desmond Adjei, a teacher at the centre, said the student was quickly assisted to the headmaster’s office. There, she delivered a healthy baby boy with the help of bystanders.

Support came swiftly. The pastor of the Asenua Presbyterian Church, who was nearby, rushed the new mother and her baby to Victory Hospital in Mamponteng using his personal vehicle.

Medical staff confirmed that both mother and child are in stable condition and receiving care.

The student’s courage and determination have earned widespread praise. Many in the community say her resolve to write the BECE despite her pregnancy is both admirable and inspiring.
