Portugal have clinched their second UEFA Nations League title after defeating Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout in Munich.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equaliser in the 61st minute to bring the match level at 2-2. With no goals in extra time, the game was decided by spot-kicks.
Ruben Neves converted the winning penalty after goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Alvaro Morata’s effort, sparking wild celebrations. Ronaldo, who was subbed off before extra time, broke down in tears on the sidelines.
Goals Galore in Regulation Time
Spain took the lead in the 21st minute when Martin Zubimendi capitalized on a defensive mix-up to slot home. But Portugal responded quickly. Just five minutes later, Nuno Mendes blasted a low drive into the far corner.
Spain regained the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal before the break. The Euro 2024 hero found space and finished confidently.
But Portugal’s talisman had the final say in regulation time. Ronaldo outmuscled Marc Cucurella and volleyed home Mendes’ deflected cross to make it 2-2.
Penalty Drama Seals Historic Win
Portugal were flawless from the spot. Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Mendes all scored. Morata’s miss left Spain on the brink, and Neves sealed the win.
With this victory, Portugal become the first nation to win the Nations League twice, denying Spain the same milestone.
