Police apply for injunction against #DumsorMustStop vigil

It is alleged the Ghana Police Service has filed an injunction application at the High Court to stop Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and her group from their intended demonstration against erratic power outages, locally known as Dumsor.

The #DumsorMustStop vigil was scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 25 2024, but has met with fierce opposition from the police on the intended venue and time of ending the protest.

After meeting with actress Yvonne Nelson and her team who organized a similar vigil in 2015, the Police said the proposed endpoint, Revolution Square is close to the Jubilee House, a security zone.

Organizers, however, disagreed and insisted on going ahead with the demonstration on June 8 instead of the initial May 25. They also changed the starting point to the University of Ghana and will end at the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout. Speeches will be delivered by various speakers before they disperse at 10 PM.

However, the Police filed an instant application to stop the vigil. The hearing of the case is scheduled for May 24, 2024.

“That I am finally advised and verily hold same to be true that this is just a cause for this Honourable Court to exercise its jurisdiction in the interest of public order, public safety, defence and effective policing to issue an order to prohibit or restrain the Respondents, their agents, assigns and anyone claiming through them from holding the intended picketing or demonstration at the Revolution Square opposite the Jubilee House,” part of the police writ said.
