The 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, says parliament has approved an amount of GH¢2.9 billion to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) following the passage of the relevant financial allocation.
The fund will support specialized care for chronic and non-communicable diseases, finance medical equipment and infrastructure, and provide resources for training, research, and human resource development.
It will also strengthen healthcare delivery and support selected health facilities across the country to enhance capacity for the delivery of advanced medical services.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, the lawmaker described the initiative as timely and essential, noting that the allocation would help reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve equity in access to specialized medical care.
“Honorable members, this house accordingly approves the sum of GH¢2.9 billion for the year ending 31st December, 2026, in line with the distribution formula approved by the house to enable the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to effectively discharge their respective mandate,” he said.
The GMTF, also known as the Mahama Cares, was officially launched by the president in April 2025, who pledged six months of his salary to start the fund.
The fund has already commenced operations in 2026, with its pilot phase actively funding life-saving treatments.
