Okyere Baafi Files RTI Request Over GRA’s Customs AI System

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, has formally filed a Right to Information (RTI) request demanding full disclosure from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) regarding its Customs Artificial Intelligence system.

The request seeks detailed information on the implementation, operational framework, and overall impact of the AI-driven system, which is currently being used in Ghana’s customs processes. The move comes amid growing public and stakeholder interest in the transparency, efficiency, and accountability of technology-driven revenue collection systems.

Mr. Okyere Baafi is expected to probe key aspects of the system, including its procurement process, functionality, and its effect on trade facilitation and revenue mobilization. The RTI request is also aimed at clarifying concerns raised by industry players about the system’s performance and its implications for importers and exporters.

The development is likely to heighten scrutiny on the GRA, as calls increase for greater transparency in the adoption of digital tools within critical sectors of the economy.

Observers say the outcome of the request could significantly shape public understanding of the role of artificial intelligence in customs administration and influence future policy decisions in Ghana’s trade and revenue space.
