MTN MoMo fraud appears to be taking another serious dimension. This gives more credence to the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations‘ quest to re-register SIM cards in Ghana next year.

On December 18, 2025, I received a WhatsApp message from this Nigeria number: +2349046230893 (Maxi Marketer) requesting to offer my business, Google review services to help build an online trust.

He stated that he should only get paid after he has completed the job. This gave me some kind of confidence that it may be a genuine person offering genuine services.

I then gave him the go-ahead to do the work, for which he charged me GHc200 for 20 reviews. The following day, he informed me he had completed the work. I checked my Google page and truly saw the reviews. But I did not send the payment to him that day.

On Tuesday, December 23, 2025 (10:43 pm), I then sent the GHc202 to the MoMo number (0546343473 – FATIMA GYEMO) he had given me earlier. I then sent him the receipt via WhatsApp, for which I noticed that he was offline, then something struck me to go to Google and check the reviews, only to my shock that all the reviews had been removed.

How MTN Ghana‘s system is aiding the success of these types of fraud.

I then went to the MTN MoMo app that I used to send the money to request an instant Reversal of the funds. The Mobile Money MoMo app reverse service was not working, and I sent an email to the MTN customer service centre as the 100 toll-free number was not working – I was only receiving “you have dialed a wrong number” after choosing option 5, “any other mobile money related services.”

At 12:48 am, MTN wrote back to me saying that “the funds have been utilized by the recipient” before my request.

This means that from 10:43 pm to 12:48 am, thus 2hours in the night, MTN is saying the funds have been withdrawn, and till now, December 25, 2025, I am unable to reach the MTN MoMo call centre as they failed to reply to my subsequent messages.

My call to the Nigerian number and the MTN Ghana MoMo number

On the following morning, December 24, 2025, I called the Nigerian line +2349046230893 (Maxi Marketer) and a lady who sounded uneducated answered, saying the number was wrong and she knew nothing about Maxi Marketer. Another closely associated is ROTIMI CASH +2349169945833. At another time, when I called the number and mentioned Fatima Gyemo, the lady handed over the phone to a man who was also speaking a Nigerian language I don’t understand – they have since blocked my number on their line.

I tried calling MoMo Number 0546343473 – I sent the money to, but the ringback tone appeared, indicating that the number is outside Ghana, and no one answers calls on that number.

This raises a serious question as to how Maxi Marketer, who seems to be residing in Nigeria, would acquired a Ghanaian MTN Number and a MoMo account.

I have since filed a complaint with the Cyber Security Authority and await their response.

Please don’t become the next victim!
