Ghanaians to register SIM cards online from June – Sam George announces

The upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise in the country is set to become more efficient and convenient for citizens, thanks to a streamlined digital process.

According to Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, the new system will enable citizens to register their SIM cards online, reducing the need for physical visits to registration centers.

The digital platform will automatically verify individuals information, minimizing manual processing times and enhancing data accuracy.

This approach is expected to save the masses time and improve the overall registration experience.

Mr. George emphasized the government’s commitment to digital transformation, ensuring a more streamlined and effective process.

Background of SIM Card Re-Registration

The SIM card re-registration exercise, launched in 2021, aims to enhance national security by reducing fraudulent activities and crimes facilitated through unregistered SIM cards.

Despite initial challenges, including low registration rates, the government remains committed to the initiative. The exercise requires all SIM card holders to re-register their cards using their Ghana Card, the national identity document.

The government acknowledges concerns about data security and potential fraudulent registrations through the mobile app. However, the new digital system is designed to mitigate these risks and improve industry regulation by ensuring accurate data on valid SIMs.

Ultimately, with millions of active SIM cards remaining unregistered, the government is working to ensure a comprehensive and verified SIM card database to combat digital fraud and strengthen regulatory frameworks within the telecoms sector.
