Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, says his rise in politics is rooted in a lifelong dedication to public service, instilled in him from childhood, not driven by ambition alone.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Personality Profile with Emefa Adeti, the NPP running mate and former Manhyia South MP said he was raised to sit at the table where real decisions are made.
“I was brought up in a politically active family. It wasn’t about just following, it was about engaging, proving I could be among decision-makers,” he said.
NAPO explained that his formative years were shaped by elders deeply involved in politics and public service. Surrounded by uncles and grand-uncles, he absorbed values of leadership and service early on.
“Growing up, I was part of associations like the Boy Scouts, Red Cross, and served as an altar boy. These weren’t random activities; they were deliberate steps towards shaping a public servant.”
He drew a parallel between his early career as a medical doctor and his political role today, both rooted in service, but on different scales.
“As a doctor, you save one life at a time. But in politics, a single policy can improve millions of lives. That’s the power of leadership through public service.”
NAPO said he didn’t just admire leadership from afar. He was brought up to embody it.
“Public service is in my heart, my mind, and my actions. That’s the foundation I stand on today.”
