President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled the Volta Economic Corridor as the flagship project under his government’s 24-Hour Economy policy. The initiative aims to tap into the vast agricultural, industrial, and environmental potential of the Volta Lake and surrounding regions.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme in Accra, President Mahama described the corridor as a strategic move to revive Ghana’s agro-industrial ambitions, originally envisioned by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“Our flagship intervention is the Volta Economic Corridor, a transformation effort to unlock the economic and environmental potential of the Volta Lake and its surrounding lands,” Mahama said.
He expressed regret that Nkrumah’s original plan, which included a strong agricultural and agribusiness focus alongside the Akosombo hydro project, had long been neglected. However, he pledged to restore that legacy. “Today, we will recreate Kwame Nkrumah’s dream. Today, his dream comes alive again,” he declared.
The corridor will include several projects across key sub-programmes of the 24-Hour Economy agenda:
- Grow 24: Irrigation of over 2 million hectares for intensive agriculture.
- Make 24: Development of agro-industrial parks for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
- Show 24: Establishment of tourism clusters along the Volta Lake to promote hospitality and cultural heritage.
- Connect 24: Transformation of the lake into a central transport route linking Ghana’s North-South and East-West corridors.
President Mahama emphasized that the corridor will catalyze inclusive economic growth and national integration.
