A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Oppong has expressed her disappointment over the conducts of some of her fellow NPP members worried they have made opposition becomes very cheap.
In a facebook post, the staunch supporter of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the NPP Flagbearer aspirant is surprised how some member of the NPP are advocating for the convicted Ayi Ayeetey aka Ataa Ayi following the Chief Justice Nominee, Justice Paul Baffour-Bonnie‘s comments that giving the notorious robber 70years in prison was strategics to keep him aways until he the judge is no more.
Answering questions at the Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, the Acting Chief Justice recalled a case from his “youthful days” in which he sentenced the notorious armed robber to 70 years in prison.
“The judges and magistrates, they are trained, they have sentencing guidelines,” he said. “But sometimes they have to go beyond it. In my youthful days, I gave somebody 70 years, Atta Ayi.”
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasised that while sentencing guidelines provide a framework, judges must sometimes exercise discretion to address the broader context of a case, including public safety and the protection of vulnerable parties.
“I gave him 70 years. And what I told myself was that if Atta Ayi was given 30 years and he comes back, my family will be the first he will attack. So by the time he comes back after 70 years, I will be dead and gone,” he said
The CJ’s comment attracted condemnation from mostly NPP member forcing Jennider to write:
The fact that some Npp members are advocating for Ataa Ayi shows how cheap opposition has become!
John Mahama should do something wrong cos these people have nothing to attack or defend anymore!
