Mahama orders immediate promotion of Deputy Directors in GES

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education across the country, even if there are no offices available for them.

The announcement was made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during a public event, where he revealed that the President took the decision after hearing repeated concerns during his campaign tours.

According to him, many deputy directors have been stuck at the same rank for years due to lack of office space, which is required for promotion to full director positions.

The directive is a direct response to long-standing frustrations among education professionals, and it comes at a time when pressure from teacher unions, especially GNAT, has been mounting.

The union had recently threatened a strike by the end of April over delayed promotions and lack of career advancement opportunities for teachers and other staff within the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that lack of office space should not be a barrier to promotion. “Even without an office, they will serve in their new roles,” he said.

This move is expected to boost morale within the education sector and ease tensions with unions, while also showing the Mahama administration’s commitment to education sector reforms and staff welfare.
