President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a transitional management committee to oversee the handover of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the direct control of the University of Ghana.

This move is part of a broader strategy to unify teaching, research, and clinical services under one institutional framework, boosting healthcare and academic outcomes.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized that the initiative will transform UGMC into a world-class teaching hospital.

“This is not just an administrative decision, it’s a strategic alignment to foster synergy between clinical services, teaching, and research,” he said.

He announced the formation of a nine-member committee, co-chaired by two experienced Ghanaians, to guide the transition.

“We will provide the necessary logistics and backing to ensure a smooth transition,” she assured.

The transition is expected to strengthen medical training and research, while enhancing UGMC’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare across Ghana and West Africa.
