President John Dramani Mahama has shared details of a high-level meeting with philanthropist Bill Gates held in Brussels on Tuesday, June 25, 2025.
The discussions centered on Ghana’s ongoing health reforms and interventions, especially efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services.
The meeting came ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session, where global leaders and donors are expected to commit funding to support vaccine programmes in developing countries.

In a Facebook post, Mahama described the conversation with Gates as “productive.” They reportedly discussed key initiatives including the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the establishment of the National Vaccine Institute, and the impact of lifting the cap on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS), a policy Mahama said is already improving healthcare financing and access.

“These meetings underscore the importance of international collaboration and sustained investment in health systems to build a healthier future for all,” Mahama wrote.
He expressed gratitude to Bill Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their continued support for Ghana, particularly through the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, which plays a vital role in global immunization efforts.

In another engagement, Mahama also met with José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board and former President of the European Commission. Barroso reportedly thanked him for his consistent support for Gavi’s vaccine replenishment campaigns.

Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to championing Gavi’s work. “Supporting an organization that is doing such crucial work for global health is always a pleasure,” he stated.
President Mahama is expected to speak at the pledging session, where he will advocate for increased global investment in Gavi’s mission, solidifying Ghana’s role as both a beneficiary and an advocate for global health equity.
