Mahama appointee, Prof Akabzaa dies after 13 days in office

The newly appointed Board Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa is dead.

Thomas Akabzaa died on April 17, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, just 13 days after his official swearing-in as Board Chairman.

Akabzaa was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to chair the eight-member PURC Board.

Despite being unable to attend his swearing-in ceremony in person on March 28, 2025, he joined virtually and was officially inducted into office.

His appointment was seen as a significant move, given his extensive experience in academia and public service.

Before his appointment to the PURC Board, Akabzaa served as a Professor at the Department of Earth Science at the University of Ghana.

His scholarly work in mining, environment, and natural resources earned him over 2,289 citations.

He authored two notable books: “Boom and Dislocation: Environmental and Social Impacts of Mining in the Wassa West District of Ghana” and “The Glittering Façade: Environmental and Health Impacts of Mining in the Obuasi Area.”

Previous Roles And Experience

Thomas Akabzaa’s experience extends beyond academia.

He served as Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy from 2011 to 2017 and held several key roles, including Board Chairman of the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited.

He was also a member of several professional associations, both locally and internationally.

Cause of Death

The cause of Akabzaa’s death has not been disclosed by the family or authorities.

His passing leaves a void in the PURC and the broader community, given his expertise and dedication to public service.
