The Acting Rent Commissioner, Fredrick Opoku, has cautioned that both landlords and tenants who fail to obtain the mandatory Rent Card could face up to six months imprisonment under Ghana’s rent regulations.
Speaking in an interview on Kasapa FM, Mr. Opoku explained that the Rent Card initiative forms part of measures to strengthen regulation in the rental housing sector and ensure proper documentation of tenancy agreements.
According to him, the policy is aimed at promoting transparency and protecting the rights of both landlords and tenants while helping the Rent Control Department effectively monitor rental transactions across the country.
Mr. Opoku emphasized that compliance with the directive is not optional, warning that failure by either party to obtain the Rent Card could attract sanctions, including a custodial sentence of up to six months.
He therefore urged landlords and tenants to visit the nearest offices of the Rent Control Department to register and obtain the required documentation to avoid running afoul of the law.
The Acting Rent Commissioner further noted that the move will also help reduce disputes in the rental market and ensure that all tenancy arrangements are properly recorded and regulated
