Kumi petitions Mahama to dissolve CJ probe committee

Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant, has petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee investigating petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Kumi, known popularly as Adenta Kumi, claims two committee members met privately with Thaddeus Sory, the lawyer for one of the petitioners. The alleged meeting took place on May 15, 2025, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra after the committee’s first sitting. Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi also reportedly joined them.

In his petition, Kumi called the alleged conduct a serious breach of judicial ethics and warned that the process now risks becoming a “sham.” He said the individuals were overheard discussing the case, raising doubts about impartiality.

Kumi also pointed out that Justice Gabriel Pwamang, one of those present, had previously ruled in favor of the same petitioner represented by Mr. Sory. He further accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Kulendi of having personal interests in the Chief Justice role, suggesting bias.

He described the situation as “deplorable” and urged President Mahama to dissolve the current committee and appoint a new, neutral panel to restore public trust.

The presidency formed the current committee on April 22, 2025.
