Ghanaian actor Richard Asante, popularly known as Kalybos, believes the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections was predictable.

Speaking on Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie on Saturday, July 5, he pointed to Ghana’s voting trends and the NPP’s internal issues.

“Every eight years, there’s usually a shift in power. But this time, it was also about frustration. The party lost touch with the people. Things fell apart. It was bound to happen,” he said. “Now, I believe they’re working to fix those mistakes.”

Though loyal to the NPP, Kalybos criticized its failure to tackle the economic challenges during its final term. “I’m fully committed to the party, but let’s be honest, things were tough. The economy hurt everyone. Someone at the top refused to listen,” he added.

Kalybos publicly supported the NPP during the 2020 elections. He was part of a group of entertainers who campaigned for the party.

He said the Free SHS policy won him over, as it relieved him of paying school fees for others. “That policy changed things for me. I had people depending on me for school. Free SHS helped lift that burden,” he explained.

Despite the loss, Kalybos remains optimistic. He believes the NPP can regain public trust if it learns from its past and truly listens to Ghanaians.
