Juventus ordered to pay Christiano Ronaldo over £8m in owed salaries

An Italian court has ordered Juventus to pay Cristiano Ronaldo £8.3m in owed wages, following a dispute over deferred salary payments during the Covid-affected 2020-21 season.

The 39-year-old Portuguese sued his former club for owning him over £17m. The Court of Arbitration has determined that Juventus must fulfil its financial obligations to Ronaldo, covering what he would have received after tax and deductions.

Juventus went into an agreement with their players in 2020/21 to defer four months’ worth of their salaries as the club was struggling financially. The monies were subsequently never paid.

Juventus also failed to report these deferred wages known as ‘salary maneuvers’ on their financial statements.

The Turin-based club made a brief statement on Wednesday after the court’s ruling. It said that “with the support of its legal counsel,” adding that it is “reviewing the decision made by the arbitration board, reserving all assessments and initiatives to preserve its rights.”
