Pusu-Namongo (U/E), Aug. 2, GNA – The leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in the Upper East Region has recognized and awarded 11 distinguished nurses and midwives in the Region.
The awardees, who were adjudged Municipal and District best nurses and midwives, initiated innovations and undertook various research projects to improve healthcare services in their respective Municipalities and Districts.
They each received certificates at the Regional launch of the nurses and midwives week celebration organized at the instance of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at Pusu-Namongo in the Talensi District.
Speaking on the selection process for the awards, Mr Emmanuel Tibil Panzin, the Regional Chairman of the GRNMA, said leadership initiated the awards scheme from the District to the national level to motivate members.
He said leadership saw the need to motivate and encourage members to continue to deliver high quality nursing and midwifery services to members of the public, while they waited for their employer to motivate them.
“We instituted the annual awards scheme as a motivational package across all Districts in our 10 administrative regions, and in December of every year, we meet in Accra for the national awards,” he said.
The Chairman explained that the 11 awardees would compete among themselves for the regional best nurse or midwife through rigorous and unbiased processes, and the selected best would compete for the ultimate prize- a car, at the national level.
He said since the introduction of the awards scheme six years ago, the Upper East had always maintained the first three positions at the national level, and in 2020, it was adjudged the overall best region in the GRNMA history competition.
Mr Panzin was confident that a member from the region would emerge as the 2025 national best nurse or midwife at the awards ceremony in December 2025.
Some awardees who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the programme, thanked leadership of the GRNMA for the initiative to introduce the awards scheme to motivate them to put up their best towards improved health service delivery.
Mr Richard Assam, the Builsa North Municipal Best Nurse, told the GNA that, “I have been working in Sandema Hospital for 12 years, and felt my work was not recognized, and so if I have been recognized today, it is icing on the cake to encourage me to do more.”
He admonished young nurses and midwives to continue to work diligently and exhibit high ethical standards saying, “People notice what you do, and at the right time, you will be recognized,” he said.
The award winners were Mr Albert Kanban Duut from the Bawku West District, Madam Matilda Welam Awapuani, Pusiga District, Mr Vitalis Nangbetersuur, Talensi District, Madam Charity Ayinga Abusambire, Bolgatanga Municipality and Mr Joseph Kwaku Mensah from the Builsa South District.
