Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku

Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku has announced that the government will release heavy-duty equipment acquired under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to begin the construction of farm access roads nationwide.

Speaking in Kumasi on Sunday, June 15, the Minister explained that each district will receive fuel support to operate the machines effectively. The goal, he said, is to improve transport between farmlands and communities, easing the movement of food produce.

“We’re supplying every district with the resources to fuel the equipment and get to work,” Mr. Opoku said. “This will make transporting food much easier.”

As part of the initiative, the government will temporarily suspend major road construction projects in rural areas. This will allow for the full deployment of DRIP machinery for critical farm road access.

Mr. Opoku also revealed that certain officials had begun efforts to award new contracts for rural road projects, but he stepped in to stop them.

“Just last week, some people were preparing to award contracts. I told them to hold off. We already have the machines. We just need to fuel them and begin work,” he stated.

This approach, he emphasized, is both cost-effective and immediately actionable, aiming to directly benefit farmers and improve local food distribution.
