Gov’t set to update Automotive Policy to cover electric vehicles

The Government of Ghana is set to revise the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to include a framework for electric vehicles (EVs), as part of efforts to attract investment and modernize the local automotive industry.

Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, announced the policy review during the launch of the new Foton Truck showroom in Tema.

She emphasized the need to create a business-friendly environment for EV investment, reflecting global trends and local ambitions.

“When the policy was first introduced five years ago, electric vehicles weren’t as prominent. Now, we are amending it to cover EVs, electric bicycles, and tricycles,” she said. “This will ensure access to incentives like subsidies and tax waivers for electric mobility.”

She added that the government is also working on a component manufacturing law and stakeholder consultations around the 24-hour economy initiative, highlighting the automotive sector’s role in achieving round-the-clock productivity.

As part of her visit, the Minister toured key assembly plants in the Tema area, including Japan Motors and Volkswagen Ghana, to engage with stakeholders and assess progress in the sector.
