The minister for sports and recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the government will sponsor about 800 supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He said each supporter would cost an estimated 9,250 US dollars, covering airfare, accommodation, and local transportation for the duration of the tournament.
Mr. Adams explained that the high cost of the package informed the decision to limit the number of beneficiaries, noting that the government would focus on ensuring a well-coordinated and manageable supporter presence.
He added that selected supporters would, however, be responsible for their visa fees and feeding expenses during the tournament.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to present logistical challenges due to its multi-country format.
Mr. Adams said the initiative forms part of efforts to maintain Ghana’s strong fan presence at major international competitions while ensuring prudent use of resources.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian football and promoting national representation on the global stage.
