GMet Unveils 100-Year Climate Atlas to Boost Planning and Disaster Preparedness

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has developed the Ghana Climate Atlas, a comprehensive 100-year climate projection tool designed to support disaster preparedness, infrastructure planning, and sustainable development.
The Atlas integrates locally observed climate data with global climate models to generate detailed and localized projections across the country, providing critical insights for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders.
Officials say the tool is expected to enhance decision-making by offering reliable climate information tailored to specific geographic areas, enabling better anticipation of weather-related risks and long-term environmental changes.
The Ghana Climate Atlas will also serve as a vital resource for sectors such as agriculture, water resource management, energy, and urban planning, where climate variability significantly impacts operations and investments.
GMet indicated that the initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen climate resilience and improve the country’s capacity to respond to climate change and extreme weather events.
The Agency encouraged institutions, developers, and local authorities to utilise the Atlas in designing projects and policies that are climate-sensitive and sustainable.
The development of the Atlas marks a significant step towards data-driven planning and reinforces Ghana’s commitment to climate adaptation and resilience-building.
