Freiburg held 0-0 at Augsburg; first away win for Kiel in Bundesliga

By John Bagratuni, dpa | Freiburg were held 0-0 at Augsburg on Sunday as they missed returning into the top four of the Bundesliga and became the only visiting team not to win this weekend.

Chances were sparse in a match between defensively strong teams, although Augsburg almost stole a stoppage time victory when Steve Mounie hit the left post.

The hosts had the better early chances, with a shot from Frank Onyeka’s shot deflected against the underside of the bar by Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu and Philipp Tietz aiming right at Atabolu when he should have done better on the stroke of half-time.

Freiburg improved after the break, but keeper Finn Dahmen first saved from Merlin Röhl, and then also in a one-on-one against winter signing Jan-Niklas Beste, who had just come on.

Dahmen is now unbeaten in a club record 433 minutes, and Atubolu has recorded five clean sheets in a row.

Freiburg had a run of four straight victories stopped on a matchday where all other eight games were won by the visiting team. Augsburg are unbeaten in eight matches, of which they have won four.

Freiburg are fifth, one point behind Mainz and two off third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt as their top four ambitions remain very much intact. Augsburg are 11th.

“In the end it was what everyone expected. We made too many mistakes up front and had to rely on defence. We were a little lucky in the end,” Freiburg coach Julian Schuster told streaming portal DAZN.

Earlier, Holstein Kiel claimed a first-ever away win with a 1-0 at fellow strugglers Union Berlin from Armin Gigovic in the 42nd minute, between the legs of Union defender Diogo Leite after being set up by Shuto Machino.

Kiel had a second goal from Phil Harris disallowed for offside on the hour, and Machino hit the outside post, while harmless Union rarely threatened.

Kiel ended a run of six games without victory with the first full points on the road in their debut season in the top flight. They moved past Heidenheim into second last, one point behind Bochum in the relegation play-off spot, to boost their survival hopes. Union are 14th after a third straight defeat.

“It is wonderful, we worked for this for a long time. I am unbelievably proud of the team, that will give a boost,” Kiel defender Timo Becker said.
