The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Norgbey, says he owes a responsibility to mark a new chapter for sports and recreation in Ashaiman by constructing two Astroturfs before 2028 ends.
According to the lawmaker who doubles as the Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee in Parliament, he understands the vital role a sports complex will play in nurturing talents, promoting youth development, and helping Ashaiman continue to produce national and global football stars.
Hon. Norgbey mentioned that it remains one of his utmost priorities but can’t be candid on the completion date.
Speaking to the blog, Ashaiman Sweet, Hon. Norgbey underscored that discussions have been held and headway has been made, reassuring the good people of Ashaiman that two turfs will be ready before the next election.
“We address this issue always, but I can’t assure you if it will be done this year or next year, but I’m very optimistic it will be a reality. It will happen before our next election. Before the next election, we have started something, and Ashaiman will see one or two AstroTurfs, so everyone will be excited,” he stressed.
In October 2025, Hon. Norgbey, in a Facebook post he made, addressed the same issue and promised to convert the Ashaiman Roman Park into an Astroturf facility after initial works began.
However, after constructive consultations with the Old Footballers Association of Ashaiman, it was agreed that the current design did not fully reflect the sporting ambitions of the community.
The project was redesigned into a modern sports complex with running tracks, spectator stands, and multipurpose facilities to meet international standards, which saw the initial amount of GH₵5 million increased to GH₵14 million.
With few days to start the month of March and close to five months since the MP made the post, there are no single lines drawn on the park to spark some form of assurance for the disappointed youth and residents in Ashaiman.
While some believe the MP will achieve this feat, others have already written him off as the best person to bring massive changes to Ashaiman.
A community advocate and football blogger, Hassan Ibrahim Dabooh, who has channeled all his time and resources to fight for this project, says he will only tone down if Ashaiman gets its share of the national cake.
“I won’t stop bashing the MP and MCE until they get us an astroturf,” he said in one of his recorded footage.
