EC seeks parliament’s help to finalize Ablekuma North collation

The Electoral Commission (EC) has appealed to Parliament to help secure police protection, which it says is necessary to complete the long-overdue collation of election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

EC Urges Intervention Amid Security Challenges

Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, made the plea on Thursday, June 19, during a parliamentary briefing. He stressed that although the Commission is committed to transparency and accountability, it cannot proceed without security support from the Ghana Police Service.

“Mr. Speaker, the collation has been transparent. As a Commission, we are committed to ensuring that the people of Ablekuma North have a representative in Parliament,” Dr. Asare said. “We urge this Honourable House to assist us in getting the support of the Ghana Police Service to provide the requisite protection to enable us to complete this collation exercise.”

Collation Stalled Despite Party Agreement

The delay follows months of political tension and uncertainty after the December 2024 general elections. Dr. Asare noted that agents from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with media representatives, had been present throughout the collation process.

“The process has been transparent, participatory, and accountable,” he stated. “Both NPP and NDC agents approved the use of scanned pink sheets and all materials used in the process.”

Despite this agreement and transparency, unresolved security concerns have left the collation incomplete. The EC now hopes that with Parliament’s intervention, the Police will provide the protection necessary to finalize the process.

Dr. Asare’s appeal comes amid persistent public calls for clarity on Ablekuma North’s parliamentary representation, an issue still unresolved over six months after the polls.
