Dragging my religion into NPP’s loss is a cheap lie – Bawumia fires

Allegations that religion played a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections have been firmly rejected by the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters, Dr. Bawumia described the claims as misleading and unsupported by data.

He noted that despite being a Muslim, he performed better than many of the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates, even in predominantly Christian constituencies.

According to him, the outcome of the party’s primaries alone disproves the theory.

“Ten of us contested for the flagbearer position. Nine were Christians and I was the only Muslim. Yet, delegates elected me. That speaks volumes,” he stated.

He explained that a detailed analysis of the election results, along with findings from additional research, shows no pattern of religious discrimination by voters.

Dr. Bawumia also expressed his support for the review conducted by the Prof. Mike Ocquaye-led committee.

He said the party would implement key reforms, including changes to the delegate system, to strengthen its internal democracy and prepare more effectively for future elections.

He urged party members to focus on facts and unity, rather than being swayed by divisive propaganda.
