Retired senior police officer and Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West, Peter Toobu Lanchene, has responded to the government’s plan to deploy the military to various borders to enforce the ban on grain exports.
In recent days, Awake News reported that the Akufo-Addo-led government intends to deploy soldiers to enforce the ban, which was announced as a measure to counter the threat of food shortages in the country.
“We want to assure you, and the nation, that the security agencies are immediately activating their network to ensure that the ban on cereals, which has been listed, is rigidly enforced so that nobody will take even a single grain out,” Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, said at a press briefing in Accra.
However, Mr. Toobu, who is also a member of the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament, argues that such a move amounts to a misapplication of the military.
In a post on Facebook, the MP wrote, “Military to be deployed to prevent exportation of grains? This is complete misapplication of our reverred Armed Forces, if true. Let’s not cheapen our military.”
