Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has directed a full investigation into the recent attacks in Bawku on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
In a statement posted on Facebook the following day, Dr. Boamah called for restraint among residents while promising swift action once recommendations from the probe are received.
“We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku,” he wrote, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the situation.
The renewed violence reportedly saw unidentified youth opening fire on a military-escorted vehicle, injuring a soldier. In response, the military allegedly vandalized a statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and assaulted civilians, an action that has sparked outrage.
Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga condemned both the civilian attack and the military’s retaliatory actions, describing the soldiers’ conduct as “unacceptable.” He has demanded immediate accountability from the military’s leadership.
