Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has condemned the Ghana Armed Forces for allegedly destroying a statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area and assaulting civilians during recent operations in Bawku.
In a statement released on July 14, 2025, Ayariga decried the reported demolition of the statue of Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, calling the act deeply offensive and destabilizing.
“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable destruction of the Zugran’s statue by military personnel,” he said, warning that such actions escalate tensions in the already volatile region.
He also described the reported use of excessive force by soldiers on July 13 as outright brutality. At the same time, he condemned a separate gun attack by an unidentified youth on a military-escorted vehicle.
Urging restraint, Ayariga called on Kusaug youth to avoid retaliation while investigations are underway. He suggested that political infiltration within the military ranks may be worsening the conflict.
“The government must act urgently to investigate and restore calm,” Ayariga insisted, while extending condolences to affected families.
Bawku continues to grapple with frequent clashes between locals and security forces, reigniting calls for peace, accountability, and responsible leadership.
