Your resignation is a disappointment to the young players – Laryea Kingston told

Renowned legal practitioner and football fanatic, Elikplim Agbemava Lorlormavor, has joined discussions around the unexpected resignation of the coach of Ghana’s U17 national team, Laryea Kingston, amid the ongoing U-17 WAFU Zone B Championship.

Laryea Kingston, on Saturday, May 25, resigned as head coach of the team following a 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. According to him, he had long planned to bow out if it happens that he could not succeed in the WAFU tournament.

“Within these past seven months as Head Coach, I’ve given my all. I decided when we came back from Russia that I would resign after the WAFU competition. The explanation will come later,” he said in a post match interview.

Kingston’s resignation, however, failed to resonate with a section of football lovers in the country.

Mr. Agbemava, in reaction to the resignation, said Kingston disappointed the players and most Ghanaians. According to him, the young players need no trophies, but his mentorship which will help them excel in their trade.

“Even though you were appointed some months ago the recent videos of your work with the players gave most of us joy. The sense of dedication and commitment you instilled in the boys was most admirable,” Mr. Agbemava wrote in a social media post.

“There is no environment without challenges or people who do not want glory as we all should. People who you expect to be happy with success are rather the ones who plot failure. You should know this and should have been patient.

“You have disappointed the young players who needed you. They did not need trophies from you. They needed mentorship and you have disappointed them with your impatience,” he indicated, adding that the players will not find “another Laryea Kingston.”
