A tense moment unfolded in Parliament when Speaker Alban Bagbin reprimanded Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for challenging his ruling during a debate.

The exchange began when Afenyo-Markin, while making his submission, questioned whether the Speaker was engaging in a debate with him. This did not sit well with Speaker Bagbin, who reminded him of the rules and procedures of the House.

Afenyo-Markin defended himself, stating, “When you ask me a question and I am answering, then you come in to ask me if I am debating you. Mr Speaker, there was a discussion, the Majority Leader had his opportunity to say his side of the story, and I am also making my point.”

In response, Speaker Bagbin firmly dismissed Afenyo-Markin’s approach, emphasizing that once a ruling is made, it cannot be contested on the floor.

“Please, Minority Leader, when you respond this way, it is not fair. When I state my ruling, and you raise the same issue again, you are debating me,” Bagbin stated.

He further reminded him that the standing orders were clear and referenced the fact that Afenyo-Markin was “not part of Gen-Zs,” a remark that sparked mixed reactions from MPs in the chamber. Some found it a lighthearted jab, while others saw it as a firm reminder of parliamentary decorum.
