World Malaria Day: AMREN calls for more action in the fight against malaria

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMREN), has called on stakeholders on the continent to put in more efforts towards the fight against malaria.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the Network, Mrs Charity Binka, to mark this year’s World Malaria Day, the group said, “It is not acceptable that thousands of people, mainly children and pregnant women continue to die needlessly of malaria.”

The group, as contained in the statement, noted that the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has negatively affected the general provision of essential health services worldwide and further bedevils efforts in the fight against malaria.

AMREN also stated that, “great progress has been made in the malaria fight, saving more than seven(7) million lives and preventing over 1billion new malaria cases but called on stakeholders to step up efforts to save many more lives from the clutches of the deadly disease.

The theme for this year’s commemoration which was held Sunday, April 25, is ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me/Draw the Line Against Malaria,’ a theme which builds on the “Zero Malaria Starts with Me”campaign movement started nearly three years
ago.

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMREN), is a Pan-African media advocacy group of journalists and scientists working together to rid the world of malaria.
