Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn his application at the High Court seeking a review of his bail conditions.
The application, filed on May 30, 2025, was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. However, his legal team formally withdrew the request on Monday, June 2, ahead of the hearing.
Chairman Wontumi had been granted bail by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to the tune of GHS 50 million, with two sureties. His lawyers initially argued that the condition was excessive and deliberately aimed at delaying his release.
The development sparked protest among members of the Minority in Parliament, who boycotted proceedings and joined supporters outside EOCO’s offices to demand a review.
In the original application, his lawyer, Garry Nimako Marfo, stated that they were seeking a court order to review the conditions under which EOCO had granted bail during its investigations into allegations of illegal mining.
However, the request has now been dropped. Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all requirements for the two justified sureties have been completed. He also credited former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, for facilitating the process.
Chairman Wontumi is expected to be released later today, Monday, June 2, after all legal processes are finalized.
