Wontumi seeks review of GH₵50m bail conditions

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed a motion at the High Court in Accra requesting a review of his GH₵50 million bail, which was set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The motion, filed on May 30, argues that the bail is excessive and may be a tactic to delay his release. Wontumi’s legal team is asking the court to reconsider the conditions, citing grounds laid out in an attached affidavit. The case is scheduled to be heard on June 3, 2025.

Lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that both sureties required have been secured, thanks in part to support from former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties. Bryan Acheampong has submitted documents that exceed the required value,” Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews.

Although the bail conditions have been met, Wontumi remains in custody due to a new legal application filed on May 30, which has temporarily halted his release.

“The EOCO officers were ready for the inspection, but this legal application prevents them from proceeding,” the lawyer explained.

Appiah-Kubi also clarified confusion surrounding Wontumi’s location, denying claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin that his whereabouts were unknown. He dismissed rumours of a hunger strike and confirmed that Wontumi is receiving medical care.

The legal team is working to resolve the new court matter, expressing hope that it will be cleared by Monday, enabling Wontumi’s release.
