When everything is Down, Football Fills in, Sack Chris Hughton – GIMPA Lecturer

The Black Stars of Ghana in a dramatic last-minute stun by the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde on Sunday 14th January 2024 earned the rave of a legal lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) faculty of law.

During the opening match of group B, Ghana was behind the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in the first 45 minutes, as they conceded a17th minute goal from Jamiro Monteiro who went for a tap-in in a rebound after Richard Ofori parried a long shot.

The Black Stats bounced back in the 56th minute which leveled the score line to 1 – 1, only to concede in the 91st minute in injury time. The late goal which was scored by Garry Mendes Rodriguez ended the match in a 2-1 defeat to the Black Stars of Ghana.

This last-minute defeat caused the law lecturer, Dr. Rainer Akumperigya to pour out his frustrations stating “when everything else in our nation is down, football fills in. This man who wears his glasses and behaves like a Physics teacher on the touchline needs to be sacked tomorrow morning.”

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration law lecturer did not only call for Chris Hughton head but waded into the psychological effect football has on Ghanaians, hence the need for the coach to have done better. “He knows nothing about the psychological effect football has on the nation”.

However, it must be noted that Chris Hughton apologized for Ghana’s defeat to Cape Verde in a post-match interview. Indicating it was a big disappointment, and promised to come out with better results in subsequent matches.

Ghana’s next fixture is against the 7-time AFCON champions Egypt on Thursday, 18th January at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny (Abidjan), at 8 pm.
